The doctor will have to take into account a number of different factors when deciding on the treatment. The most important of these are how fast the tumor is likely to grow and how far it has already grown.

Surgery (Radical Prostatectomy)

Radical prostatectomy is one of the treatments for prostate tumor. It is an operation to remove the prostate and the tumor contained within it. It may also be an option for some men with tumor that has spread to the area just outside the prostate. This is depending on how far the tumor is spread.

External Beam Radiotherapy

External beam radiotherapy uses high energy X-ray beams to treat prostate tumor. The X-ray beams are directed at the prostate gland from outside the body. They damage the cancer cells and stop them growing. The patient will be given hormone therapy for three to six months before beginning radiotherapy. This shrinks the prostate and makes the tumor easier to treat. Other than that, men who are at higher risk of their tumor spreading may continue to have hormone therapy for at least two years after radiotherapy. Before starting the radiotherapy the patient must to scan to find the exact location, size and shape of prostate. This is to make sure the treatment is accurate and that the surrounding areas do not receive more radiation than it necessary.

Hormone Therapy

Hormone therapy works by stopping the hormone testosterone from reaching prostate tumor cells. It treats the tumor, wherever it is in the body. Other than that, testosterone controls how the prostate glands grow and develops. It also controls male characteristics, such as erection, muscle strength, and the growth of the penis and testicles. If the patient have an aggressive prostate tumor, it can make the tumor cells grow faster when too many hormone testosterone. If testosterone is taken away, the tumor will usually shrink, wherever it is in the body.  Hormone therapy alone who not cure the prostate tumor but it can keep it under control for several years before need further treatment.
